Blog | Advice From A Past Bride

This is one of our favourite segments on our blog.  We interview real brides who have been there, tied the knot & we ask for all their best advice from their wedding.

Today, we're featuring Logan Hill's best wedding day advice.  Logan purchased her gown from OUTW & got married on September 12, 2015.  She looked amazing in her gown and we cannot wait for you to read her words of wisdom.

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give a newly engaged bride-to-be?

Don't sweat the small stuff! Whatever is not done by the day of, is not important and no one will notice, and/or care.

Easier said than done :)  But worth trying, for sure!

What is the best advice you would give for a bride-to-be who is searching for her dream dress?

Just try on whatever they suggest. Even if you hate it, at least you tried, and it may be a style that actually looks good on you.

What is the best advice you were given as a bride-to-be?

To just enjoy the day. It goes so fast

What is something you regret when wedding planning?

Listening to everyones ideas and opinions. It makes it confusing and frustrating. Just do what you want.

What is one thing you're glad you did when you were planning your wedding/engaged?

Made all the centre pieces myself. Then It was what I wanted and if they didnt look great it was my fault. Knowing how hard I worked and having some not turn out made it easier to just " meh oh well". Its just a centre piece...it's not the end of the world.

Is there anything else you'd want to tell a future bride?

Have good food, good music/dj, and a dress you feel great in. That is all anyone remembers. The food, the fun, and the dress.

Real Bride | Kelsey + Greg Engaged!

It's hard to believe it's April!  But with a new month, comes a new Real Bride.  This month we'll be journeying with Kelsey + Greg who got married in February 2018.  Today on the blog, they're sharing their engagement story.

DSC_20.jpg

How did the two of you meet?

We met working together at Future Shop. Greg was in the department next to mine, right across the aisle.

How'd you know your fiancé was the one?

There was one night when I was at work after having a rough week that he sent me a picture of the sunset, something I always watch out our window. He said something along the lines of "I know you would be so excited if you saw this, I didn't want you to miss it." It was after he did that I knew I wanted to spend forever with him.
DSC_09.jpg

How did your fiancé propose? (from the brides point of view)

He was taking me to Toronto after the Christmas holidays, as I had moved away for school. I knew something was up because he said there was something he HAD to do that morning. Turns out he was telling my parents his plan! We pulled off the highway in Milton and went for a hike to a frozen waterfall. He waited till we were alone and asked me to marry him.

How did you propose? (from the grooms point of view)

We were driving her back to school and we stopped at a conservation area. We hiked to a frozen waterfall and I proposed.

March Real Bride | Doerbecker Wedding

Today, we finish out our journey with Real Bride Heather + Husband Jamie.  They tied the knot on a beautiful fall day last September 16, 2017.  Let's dive into the story of their wedding day...

Their ceremony was at Coldstream Conservation Area + their reception was at Coldstream Community Centre.

HeatherWedding1.jpg

Who were your favourite vendors from your wedding day?

Our caterers BBQ Feast were amazing! Latte productions did a beautiful job capturing our day and got so many pictures. We did a lot of our own decorations with the help of our parents, family, and family friends. Our DJ was a family friend who did a great job keeping everyone on the dance floor. Our florists from Bloomingdale's did an amazing job incorporating purple and red flowers into our bouquets and centerpieces. We had one of our uncle's bake the desserts which were a huge hit! Jamie and I helped bake some the desserts as well which was a lot of fun.
HeatherWedding2.jpg

Any other unique details or stories about your wedding/love story you want to tell us?

We loved being able to have the first look before the ceremony, it helped us calm our nerves and give us a chance to have a special moment just the two of us. We met as orientation leaders and have been together 5 years, we got married close to our 5 year anniversary (a day earlier).
HeatherWedding3.jpg

What's your favourite memory from your wedding day?

Heather's: My favourite part of our wedding day was everything it was perfect! We had the perfect weather and the perfect day. I loved being able to marry my best friend and celebrate with our family and friends
Jamie's: I really enjoyed hearing all the speeches, it was nice to be able to look back while also looking forward to our new life together.
HeatherWedding4.jpg

What did your husband think of your dress?

I was speechless when I was finally able to see Heather in her dress at our first look. She was absolutely beautiful and it was a great look on her.

March Real Bride | Heather's Dress

We love all of our brides at OUTW!  Heather heads a special place in our hearts as we have known her for several years & been able to watch her grow up and mature in the beautiful woman she is today.

So we were so excited when she came to OUTW to find her gown.  She came in hoping to find a beautiful experience, unsure if she would purchase that day and she left with a beautiful gown + an equally beautiful grin!  Let's journey together through her appointment where Heather said YES to the Dress!!

HeatherDress3.jpg

Were you expecting to purchase your dress when you came in for your appointment?

It was the first day trying on dresses, I was not expecting to buy my dress that day
HeatherDress4.jpg

About how many dresses did you try on before you found 'The One'?

Around 10 dresses. My dress was the last one I tried on

Who was with you at your appointment?

My mom and 2 sisters

Did anyone have extra influence on helping you say yes to the dress?

My mom, sisters and Sharon. Sharon convinced me to try on the dress that became my dress.
HeatherDress1.jpg

Was the dress you bought similar to what you came in thinking you wanted?

Nothing at all like I had in mind, this dress totally exceeded my vision!

Did you try on dresses before coming to OUTW?

Yes I did.
HeatherDress2.jpg

How was your experience at Once Upon A Time Weddings?

It was perfect! Sharon made me feel welcome, wanted to know all about Jamie, how long we had been together, how he proposed, when our wedding was, what I was looking for in a dress. She sat down with me and asked to see pictures of what I was thinking, she asked my mom and sisters what they wanted to see me in. I had it in my mind I did not want a ball gown because it was too much dress. Sharon brought me a few options and let me pick what to try on. She convinced me to try on the ball gown which I was avoiding. It was the last dress I tried on, she said that I could custom my dress and take away some of the skirt and change the top. I really wanted lace on the top of my dress, Sharon showed me some options of different options. I picked out the one I wanted and then the skirt. I ended up going with the ball gown. I loved it without all the skirt! I was the last one to realize that it was my dress. My mom was the first one as she got teary, then my sisters, then me. I loved my dress and going to Once Upon a Time Weddings. It was the third store I went too and I was super nervous I had a feeling that my dress would be there and that I would find my dress.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your story to finding the dress?

I would recommend Once Upon a Time Weddings to anyone looking for a wedding dress, bridesmaid dress or even a mother of the bride/groom dress. It was such a great experience, and made me feel special. I was hoping for the experience I had seen on TV and it was so much better! Thank you for helping me find my dress it was beautiful!

March Real Bride | Heather Doerbecker

Hello March! We love bringing in each new month with a new Once Upon A Time Weddings Real Bride! This month we are featuring Heather and her now husband Jamie Doerbecker. These two are seriously radiant for each other, we absolutely love their love story and hope you do as much as us! Just wait until you read Jamie's proposal below...swoon.

HeatherEngagement3.jpg

How did the two of you meet?

"Orientation week at the University of Waterloo we were both leaders."
HeatherEngagement1.jpg

How'd you know your fiancé was the one?

"There wasn't a specific moment for me that I knew Jamie was the one, rather smaller ones added together. The smaller moments were always making me smile and making me laugh. He loves country music and so do I. He is very caring, thoughtful, and has a huge heart. He is always helping other people, putting others first which is similar to me. He always knows what to say in any situation. I have a big family and they are very important to me and when I saw him with them and feel comfortable around them and get along with my cousins I knew we would be together for a long time. I learned very quickly that Jamie's family is also important to him. Another thing that helped me see he was the one is when I see him playing with our little cousins and how natural that comes to him."
HeatherEngagement2.jpg

How did your fiancé propose?

Heather: "We were going to my parents house for the weekend. We were coming from Waterloo and heading just outside of Strathroy. I had asked Jamie if we could go watch the sunset before going to my parents house because it is one of my favourite things to do. I find it so relaxing and calming and wanted to be able to spend the quality time with Jamie. It was June 10, 2016 so it was starting to be nice weather. We decided to go out for dinner and went to the Growling Gator and sat on the patio. We were able to see the start of the sunset and the few clouds rolling in. We eat supper then walked down to the beach, we found a spot to sit and I asked Jamie to take a picture of me with the sunset and I also said I wanted pictures of us in front of the sunset as well. We went over and asked a group of girls if someone would come and take our picture. One girl agreed and she came over and took off her sunglasses and said, "Hi Heather, how are you?" I responded, "Hi Emily, I am good thanks and you?" We had a quick chat and Jamie said to me, "You know her!" which I said, "Yes we grew up down the street from each other and went to public and high school together". We got a few pictures together then Jamie said, "The sunset is beautiful tonight, but not as beautiful as you Heather." He then pulled out the ring, got down on one knee and asked me "Heather will you spend the rest of your life with me?" My reaction was, "OH MY GOD THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW?" Which Jamie said yes it is. After I let it sink it for a few seconds I said, "Of course I will!!" Jamie put the ring on my finger and we hugged and kissed. I got a bit teary and I was so excited!! I was so surprised when it happened. It was the perfect timing from Jamie, after he proposed the sunset was hiding behind the clouds. It was the perfect night! We were so happy we couldn't wait to tell our family and friends."
HeatherEngagement5.jpg
Jamie: "A while before I actually proposed we were driving along the 401, I decided to bring up interesting ways to propose or how she dreamed of being proposed to. We had a lengthy conservation of good, bad and that better never happen if we were to ever get engaged. This conservation really didn't sway my idea on, Heather always loved watching the sunset so I knew that is how it had to happen. Once I had asked her parents for their blessing, I went out and got a ring from Poaggs. Since I was not from the area I asked Heather's parents to pick up the ring from the store once it was resized and had to figure out a time to get it from them. It just happened to work out that after they picked it up we all ended going to a jays game and I was able to get the ring from her dad and put it in the glove box while she was with her mom. I had it for a little while when Heather said she wanted to go see a sunset on the way to her parents, so naturally i agreed because little did she know she just planned her own engagement. For that night I packed a bag and was able to get to get the ring in without Heather noticing, there were a few close calls when she put some stuff in the bag and took some stuff out but she never noticed the ring box in the next pocket. As we were driving to grand bend we were just singing along to the radio when a friend of ours texted Heather so since Heather was driving she asked to text her back. This was really helpful to calm my nerves. We went for dinner downtown and then went to the beach to catch the sunset. We walked the beach for a little bit and then Heather said where would you like to go, I remember saying it really doesn't matter to me. Once we found a spot I got some towels out so we had something to sit on and Heather said could you take some pictures of me with the sunset so I did. She then said I would like some of us so I said I will go ask someone, and there just happened to be a group of girls sitting close by so I went to ask them. Heather said here take my phone cause it takes better pictures but I walked over to them and asked if they could take some pictures for us and they said sure. I handed them my phone with a note saying I am about to propose could you take some pictures for me. As she walked over to take our picture she said hi Heather, cause they had grown up down the street from each other. I had put my glasses in my backpack because they tint with the sun so they were pretty dark, which also allowed me to grab the ring and put it in my pocket. A few seconds went by then I looked at Heather and then the sunset and said the sunset is beautiful but not as beautiful as you, then I got down one one knee and said will you marry me? it took a few seconds for her to even say anything which were the longest seconds of my life. Finally she said is this for real and then said of course I will. Pretty much after she said yes we lost the sunset behind some clouds. As we were walking back to the car we started calling our parents and close friends."

Any other unique details or stories about your wedding/love story you want to tell us?

"When we met at the party 11 years ago, I was instantly attracted to him like it was love at first sight. Me and a friend got into his car to go up to the store, and when he looked at me, he immediately smiled and blushed away all coy like. That is why I started off my vows with, "When I saw you I fell in love, and you smiled because you knew." In his vows, he also referred to love at first sight upon meeting me, and how he knew I was something special."

One of our favourite things about Celine + Nate's wedding was all the DIY touches.  Her attention to all the little details shined through on her wedding day and we adore it.

February Real Bride | Celine Says Yes To The Dress

Celine said yes to the dress on May 5th 2016 and Once Upon A Time Weddings was her first stop for dress shopping! She trusted her gut and knew she had found the one! Celine also came back for her maids gowns and says this about her second experience, "My second experience was really helpful, accommodating and I felt like I trusted the staff to find what style I was looking for." We love seeing you brides more than just once! Enjoy reading all about Celine's experience saying yes to the dress below!

Dress3.jpeg

About how many dresses did you try on before you found 'The One'?

"Technically one, because the first dress I tried on was the one I came specifically for and ended up saying "Yes" too, but about 3-4 others afterwards."

Was the dress you bought similar to what you came in thinking you wanted?

"Yes, just like I envisioned!"
Dress6.jpeg

Were you expecting to purchase your dress when you came in for your appointment?

"It was still early in our engagement so I wasn't even planning on shopping yet, but OUATW uploaded a picture on their facebook page of a brand new gown that I happened to see. I was gushing with joy, and I just knew it was "The one" and so I called the next day to make an appointment for that following Saturday. I wasn't expecting to purchase that day, but my mind was so set on the dress I seen that I just needed to know for sure. They say that most brides don't end up with a dress they always vision themselves in, but I've always been the type of women to just know. Poofy, princess, bling and ball gown is what I always seen myself in, and I got it!"
Dress4.jpeg

Who was with you at your appointment?

"My mom, Grandma, MOH and aunt."

Did anyone have extra influence on helping you say yes to the dress?

"My Grandma. As she was helping me in it for the second time, she silently told me how I wouldn't find anything better as mine was so unique, and gorgeous."
Dress5.jpeg

How was your experience at Once Upon A Time Weddings?

"Amazing! I'm the type who likes personal experiences, and needs to connect with others. I enjoyed the laid back, not rushed atmosphere where I felt like the center of attention. (I waited 10 years for this day, I wanted my moment) haha!"
Dress2.jpeg

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your story to finding the dress?

"I knew about OUTW before being engaged from other brides going there, and their great experiences so I was always excited at the thought of getting to go there myself one day. Leading up to dress shopping, I of course had pictures saved on what styles I wanted but nothing stood out to me like seeing the one OUATW posted that one magical night."
