A Non-Cheesy Way to Include Thanksgiving into Your Wedding Day

Love Thanksgiving? What a perfect theme to incorporate into your wedding! It’s a season of love and food! There are ways to add that homey holiday flare without constructing some form of a paper turkey. Especially if your wedding day happens to “fall” right on the holiday weekend!.

For your table settings think harvest theme, use thanksgiving inspired ingredients in a fresh way for your menu, while expressing thanks to your loved ones in a number of ways throughout the celebrations.

For your table decor don’t be afraid to add multiple elements such as candles, fresh produce, foliage garlands and any other autumn-ish decor items. To add even more of your traditions or to make your guests feel more at home, add touches such as various household items, rugs and comfy furniture.

For escort cards adding something such as pairs with your guests names on the leaves adds a personal touch for your family and friends (you could do this with any fruit to match your theme/venue)

For venue spaces, nothing says the holidays like a family home or a rustic barn space. You can also use an outdoor space (weather pending). Adding area rugs to your aisle can also add warmth and compliment your colour palette.

Bring your furry friends, having the family dog be part of the wedding couldn’t make it feel anymore like you’re at home on the holidays.

For entertainment, you can always go with a traditional band or DJ. However, if you do have any musical talent in the family add them into the mix and bring that personal touch to your special day while making it really feel like the holidays.

Now for cocktail hour, the fall season brings plenty of options for drinks and desserts! For beverages you can do a seasonal punch or even a mulled cider which is delicious served hot or cold.

For an eclectic flare, use mismatched plates and serve ware to add more rustic charm and family tradition to your place settings. Even using some of your family’s china will bring a personal touch. Rental companies also offer great options for this style.

Other than a traditional wedding cake/cupcakes , there is one other dessert alternative that we love to indulge during the holidays… PIE. Some brides have even had a specific pie station with multiple classic flavours. But don’t forget about our good autumn friend the apple, there are so many options. The most popular is an apple dipping table for guests to have fun and create their own take home snack!

Inspiration Blog | Secret Garden Theme.

We have seen a lot of different themes over the years.  And we absolutely love it when a couple chooses a theme that matters to them and goes all out!  When it comes to wedding themes, your imagination is your only limit.  {Well and maybe your budget lol}

Today on the blog, I wanted to share a Secret Garden Wedding Theme.  And of course, we picked a gown from OUTW that we think would be perfect for this theme.

Let's dive in!

The reason that I love the theme of Secret Garden is because I love the mix of whimsical and romantic.  Like this cake table created by Selah Vie Weddings + Events.  I love the mix of cupcakes, cakes and macaroons made by Bright Eyes Cake Design.  Photography by Dylan Martin Photography.

I love the soft hues of these colours together.  And I love the return of gold accents in wedding decor and wedding planning.  Photograph from Pinterest.

We love these centrepieces for a secret garden wedding theme.  Simple, yet beautiful.  As a big book reader, I love how they incorporated old books and how it gives a nod to classic, olden days.  Photograph from Pinterest.

These invitations from The Paper Bride, which are available at Once Upon A Time Weddings are the perfect addition to any garden wedding.  I love the florals mixed with the navy colour.

The Secret Garden Theme is the perfect theme for mix-matched bridesmaids.  We love these colours together and they still give you lots of colour choices for florals + decor.

We adore this gown which will arrive to OUTW in August.  We cannot wait for brides to try it on.  We love the lace details and how it has a touch of lace underneath the tulle skirt.  We think it's the perfect combination of whimsical and romantic, just like the Secret Garden theme.

Burgundy + Slate Blue Wedding Theme

Last year, the colour Marsala exploded on the wedding scene and popped up in everything from decor to bridesmaids gowns to florals.  This year, the colour Slate Blue has quickly taken the wedding industry by storm.  Today, on the blog, I thought I would feature the two colours together and the effects are beautiful!

These colours look amazing mixed with a touch of gold in the accents.

For this colour combo you could put the men in either grey or navy.  Throwing in some pops of blush and creams make the colours pop that much more.

We loved the dusty blue flowers with pops of other colours.  We are loving the trend of creating a bouquet that has multiple colours within it.  This bouquet would also look amazing with your maids in the wine colour.

Who doesn't love a floral crown?  They are such a fun way to incorporate your colours and achieve that Boho look.

We matched this Slate Blue gown with some blush & burgundy florals that we had in the store.  Such a beautiful look.  This bouquet also has touches of lace in it as well.

Another option would be to keep your bridal bouquet a bit simpler and do the girls with more accent colours.  We love the pops of the darker burgundy mixed in with the softer shades.  Against a white or ivory gown this bouquet would be stunning!

We love this decor.  It's a great reminder that less is sometimes more.  I love that the main colour is the dusty blue and then there are some splashes of gold and subtle hints of burgundy in the flowers.  I love the candles and that it's fancy without being too over the top.

And of course, we couldn't do a theme without showcasing a gown from OUTW that we thought would fit in perfectly with this colour scheme.  This is a new arrival for us and the back and train are equally as stunning.  We adore the classic ivory with this colour to make the burgundy + slate blue be the focal point.

Spring is in the Air!

The weather has been too nice the past week not to start thinking about how spring is on the horizon, so we are exploring some 2018 spring wedding trend colours today! From invites to maids dresses picking a colour scheme for your Spring wedding should be fun and man are these colour schemes fun!

1. The watercolour theme really started to take off last year and is gaining even more momentum this year! We love the soft tones, whimsical atmosphere, and romantic feel this palette adds to wedding days. This gives you the traditional option of any colour you want with a spin on the softness or deep tones. Both, equally as beautiful.

2. What says "Spring" more than some floral prints!! This trend is so fun and we can't wait to see how brides bring them into their wedding's this Spring. It can be such an easy way to give your decor some texture without spending $1,000's of dollars on flower arrangements.

We love this idea of a floral print table cloth or runner to add vibrance to your table arrangements instead of spending all your energy on extravagant centrepieces.

Going for a simple wedding gown but still want to add some kind of pop to it? Why not do it with your shoes!! These floral heels are SURE to go down in history!

3. Pastels are something that never go out of style and look great in the Spring and Summer. Pick one pastel colour and stick to it or go for a palette of pastels; each are beautiful and timeless!

We adore the mismatch maid's dress trend and pastel's make it so easy to do this! How classy and beautiful are these maids dress colours?

And is there a bouquet that screams Spring any louder?!😍

And we can't forget about your groom! Pastels look dapper on him too!

Wedding Dress Dictionary

Dress Shopping is like learning a whole other language.  What's a bride to do?

Whether you are one of those girl's whose been playing dress up in their pretend wedding gown since they were 4 or you're the type of bride who hasn't spent a lot of time thinking about their wedding gown, this blog is for you.  We've got a wedding dress dictionary for you to learn all the in's and out's of wedding dress lingo! We hope you find this helpful as you prepare for your say yes day!

A-Line Silhouette: An A-line wedding dress features a skirt that gradually begins to flare out from a fitted bodice, starting below the natural waist, and lightly skimming the hips, as it and extends to the hem, forming an "A" shape. This silhouette is thought to be universally figure-flattering.

Bustle: A fancy word for a sewing method used to transition a gown with a long train into a length that makes it easier to walk and dance in.

Bodice: The top part of your dress, above the waist.

Boning: This gives a dress' bodice structure and prevents drooping, especially in a strapless dress and we seriously cannot stress how important this is in a strapless dress!! Which is why we carry the exclusive designers that we do here at OUTW.

Chiffon: A very soft, delicate fabric that is extremely sheer and layered for modesty. This fabric is best known for being popular for bridesmaids dresses but is also becoming a lot more popular for wedding gowns.

Corset: A lace up back of the bodice, whether for ascetics or wiggle room with your size. Give yourself some extra time on your wedding day to lace it up!

Fit and Flare Silhouette: A dress with a fitted bodice through the hips and a flared skirt.

Illusion Back: A more recent trend in wedding gowns - this design gives you the look of an open  back with the comfort and beauty of a full coverage gown.

Organza: A type fabric/material that is made from silk, but is much stiffer than chiffon. It has a similar sheen to it, like satin but without all the weight while still creating volume in a dress. Often used for full skirts to give it more flow than tulle.

Sheath Silhouette: A long, narrow, slim-fitting silhouette with straight, lines usually made from lighter fabrics, such as satin or chiffon, which is more suitable for the body-skimming shape.

Sweetheart Neckline: A strapless bodice with rounded fabric over each breast, meeting in a V-neck point in the middle - makes a heart-like shape.

Train: The long back portion of a the dress that trails behind the bride. Trains can be different lengths. Brides adore this feature for walking down the isle and formal pictures.

|2| Destination Weddings - With the rise of the non-traditional bride, destination weddings continue in popularity. From the whimsical feel of destinations to the thrill of traveling, destination weddings are certainly still on the rise.

|4| Simplicity - Organic all the way. From the florals to the decorations to the colour palettes - brides are doing less when it comes to decor. DIY is still trendy and thank goodness for that because it sure does save a lot on the budget!

|5| Abundance of Greenery - This goes along with simplicity but when it comes to bouquets and floral decor, greenery is on the rise. It can be cheaper, it fills space, and it is beautiful.

|6| Bridal Headpieces - We are seeing more and more brides gravitate towards the metal leaf headpieces! From silver to gold to rose gold, your choices are abundant and here at OUTW we have tons of options for you to try on with your dream gowns!

Advice From a Past Bride | Racheal Taylor

We are starting a new and fun feature on our blog today and we couldn't be more excited!!! Wedding planning can be stressful so we thought it would be helpful to share advice from brides who have been there! Get some real life advice from everyday people who have planned their wedding.

Today, we chatted with Racheal Taylor who got married on September 13th of 2014 and we are loving her real and raw advice! We hope you enjoy this new feature and get some helpful hints for your own wedding planning!

 2014

2014

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give a newly engaged bride-to-be?

"My biggest piece of advice is PLAN AHEAD. I found this really helped keep me from being overwhelmed like I hear a lot of brides being while planning their wedding. I was able to enjoy planning my wedding, crafting up decor, all while expecting our first child to be due 3 months before our wedding."

What is the best advice you would give for a bride-to-be who is searching for her dream dress?

"Be open minded! I had an idea of what I liked in pictures, but tried EVERY style on even if I didn't think I would like the material, fit, colour etc. In the end I actually took an element from a each dress I tried on and was able to explain those things I really liked in each dress to the OUTW tribe and they had MY exact dress, all the details I had described."

What is the best advice you were given as a bride-to-be?

"I don't know if this counts as advice but I was being super cheap with my dress I had in my head $800 max. Not because we couldn't afford more but because I'm just normally a budget freak lol. My mother in law pushed me to up my budget a bit and voila my dress was found. My dream dress."

What is something you regret when wedding planning?

"Too big! We rented a HUGE hall with over 200 people and we both wish we scaled it down a bit for a more cozy wedding."

What is one thing you're glad you did when you were planning your wedding/engaged?

"I am so glad I included my mother in law as much as I did. She was a major help! We couldn't have planned / decorated our wedding without her!"

Is there anything else you'd want to tell a future bride?

"Enjoy this time. This is honestly one of the most exciting moments the days and months leading up to your wedding. It goes by in a blink. Plan ahead so you are not so stressed out with everything piling up at once. I'm just itching to plan our 10 year anniversary one day! I love party planning!"
