Dress Shopping is like learning a whole other language.  What's a bride to do?

Whether you are one of those girl's whose been playing dress up in their pretend wedding gown since they were 4 or you're the type of bride who hasn't spent a lot of time thinking about their wedding gown, this blog is for you.  We've got a wedding dress dictionary for you to learn all the in's and out's of wedding dress lingo! We hope you find this helpful as you prepare for your say yes day!

A-Line Silhouette: An A-line wedding dress features a skirt that gradually begins to flare out from a fitted bodice, starting below the natural waist, and lightly skimming the hips, as it and extends to the hem, forming an "A" shape. This silhouette is thought to be universally figure-flattering.

Bustle: A fancy word for a sewing method used to transition a gown with a long train into a length that makes it easier to walk and dance in.

Bodice: The top part of your dress, above the waist.

Boning: This gives a dress' bodice structure and prevents drooping, especially in a strapless dress and we seriously cannot stress how important this is in a strapless dress!! Which is why we carry the exclusive designers that we do here at OUTW.

Chiffon: A very soft, delicate fabric that is extremely sheer and layered for modesty. This fabric is best known for being popular for bridesmaids dresses but is also becoming a lot more popular for wedding gowns.

Corset: A lace up back of the bodice, whether for ascetics or wiggle room with your size. Give yourself some extra time on your wedding day to lace it up!

Fit and Flare Silhouette: A dress with a fitted bodice through the hips and a flared skirt.

Illusion Back: A more recent trend in wedding gowns - this design gives you the look of an open  back with the comfort and beauty of a full coverage gown.

Organza: A type fabric/material that is made from silk, but is much stiffer than chiffon. It has a similar sheen to it, like satin but without all the weight while still creating volume in a dress. Often used for full skirts to give it more flow than tulle.

Sheath Silhouette: A long, narrow, slim-fitting silhouette with straight, lines usually made from lighter fabrics, such as satin or chiffon, which is more suitable for the body-skimming shape.

Sweetheart Neckline: A strapless bodice with rounded fabric over each breast, meeting in a V-neck point in the middle - makes a heart-like shape.

Train: The long back portion of a the dress that trails behind the bride. Trains can be different lengths. Brides adore this feature for walking down the isle and formal pictures.

How to be the most kick-butt bridesmaid!

Being a bridesmaid can be tough. And it’s easy to get caught up in your own excitement and forget what your role as a maid is. So today on the blog, owner of Once Upon A Time Weddings, Erin Bouchard is sharing her 5 tips to being the best bridesmaids a bride can ask for.

  1. Remember it’s about the bride.

This day is for the bride. Shopping for a gown is for the bride. The bachelorette is for the bride. Remember that there is a difference between giving your opinion and enforcing your way. Share ideas but make sure you listen more to the bride’s ideas. So often in bridal appointments we hear friends giving their opinion is a degrading way. “Well I don’t like that gown at all, but that’s just me.” Most brides will not be able to hear someone say they hate their gown and still purchase it. Think about how you say things. You could try saying something like, “Well this isn’t my personal style, but you do look beautiful in it.”

2. Show up.

Don’t leave your girl hanging. If you say you’ll be somewhere, be there. If you’re running late, text or call and give an update. Be there for all the important things - showers, bachelorette, fittings, etc. Get all the dates in your calendar and make it a priority.

3. Ask the bride what you can do to help.

She likely has a whole list of things she is wanting help with. So ask her regularly. Check in with her on progress on tasks. Be as helpful as you can.

4. Don’t complain.

This should be a given. Don’t complain to the bride. But also don’t be complaining to other members of the wedding party. It may get back to the bride and no one needs that much negativity. Show enthusiasm.

5. Follow through on what you say you will do.

If you say you’ll get your dress ordered by a certain date, then do it. If you say you’ll come over to stuff invitations, do it. Brides have enough stress to worry about, that they don’t need to also be tracking you down to finish your tasks.

Bonus Tip: Have fun. Being in a wedding should be fun and exciting. Be respectful of your bride, yes. But also do some fun things with your bride. Whisk her away to the movies or gift her a gift card to a restaurant. Tell her that her only to do task at the dinner is to not talk about the wedding. Give her some stressful moments during a stressful time.

March Real Bride | Doerbecker Wedding

Today, we finish out our journey with Real Bride Heather + Husband Jamie.  They tied the knot on a beautiful fall day last September 16, 2017.  Let's dive into the story of their wedding day...

Their ceremony was at Coldstream Conservation Area + their reception was at Coldstream Community Centre.

Who were your favourite vendors from your wedding day?

Our caterers BBQ Feast were amazing! Latte productions did a beautiful job capturing our day and got so many pictures. We did a lot of our own decorations with the help of our parents, family, and family friends. Our DJ was a family friend who did a great job keeping everyone on the dance floor. Our florists from Bloomingdale's did an amazing job incorporating purple and red flowers into our bouquets and centerpieces. We had one of our uncle's bake the desserts which were a huge hit! Jamie and I helped bake some the desserts as well which was a lot of fun.

Any other unique details or stories about your wedding/love story you want to tell us?

We loved being able to have the first look before the ceremony, it helped us calm our nerves and give us a chance to have a special moment just the two of us. We met as orientation leaders and have been together 5 years, we got married close to our 5 year anniversary (a day earlier).

What's your favourite memory from your wedding day?

Heather's: My favourite part of our wedding day was everything it was perfect! We had the perfect weather and the perfect day. I loved being able to marry my best friend and celebrate with our family and friends
Jamie's: I really enjoyed hearing all the speeches, it was nice to be able to look back while also looking forward to our new life together.

What did your husband think of your dress?

I was speechless when I was finally able to see Heather in her dress at our first look. She was absolutely beautiful and it was a great look on her.

Any other unique details or stories about your wedding/love story you want to tell us?

"When we met at the party 11 years ago, I was instantly attracted to him like it was love at first sight. Me and a friend got into his car to go up to the store, and when he looked at me, he immediately smiled and blushed away all coy like. That is why I started off my vows with, "When I saw you I fell in love, and you smiled because you knew." In his vows, he also referred to love at first sight upon meeting me, and how he knew I was something special."

One of our favourite things about Celine + Nate's wedding was all the DIY touches.  Her attention to all the little details shined through on her wedding day and we adore it.

Interview with We're Weddings

We are excited to share this new and exciting company based right here in Strathroy, We're Weddings! Throughout this chat with owners Mitchell Bennett and Derek Lamoureux you'll hear all about what service they offer to brides and grooms AND vendors! Their company is so unique, you don't wanna miss out on this!

What kind of service do you offer to brides and grooms?

"We help couples find wedding vendors that match their needs, match their budget, and are available on their wedding day."

What do you offer for the wedding vendors?

"For the vendors we bring them quality leads from brides in there area that are in the market for their services."

How did you come up with this idea?

"Derek and I (Mitchell) were discussing an idea I had regarding finding musicians gigs, from that Derek suggested that this system might be a better fit for the wedding industry and I agreed."

How far in advance does the Bride + Groom need to book your services?

"We aim to get our brides their quotes in 3 days or less, that being said, the more time couples leave themselves the better."

How does your service work? Do the bride and groom get to pick from different bids?

"We collect all of the necessary information for a vendor to establish an educated quote based on the information we collect. We provide the couples with quotes that match their budget and date. From there they can take into consider the vendors individual style and past work and pick the vendor that is right for their special day."

Are the bride and groom stuck with the best offer if they don't prefer that vendor?

"The couple can pick whichever vendor they believe to be the perfect match."

How specific does the bride and groom get to be when making their offer? (Type of food they want, style of photography, etc.)

"Depending on the type of vendor some need more information then others. For instance a make up artist just needs a head count, were as as limo company needs the locations you'll be stoping at, how many people need to be transported, how long the limo has to be available for. Those are just a few examples, all categories are different."

How can a Bride + Groom customize their wedding package with you?

"The customization is in the hands of the vendors they select, we just help them find the right ones to match their customization."

How much am I investing as a Bride + Groom?

"Free for the couple (we collect money from the vendor)."
