Bride and Groom

5 Tips for A Thriving Marriage

While we love all aspects of wedding planning, sometimes brides forget to plan for their marriage and not just the wedding day. With that thought in mind, we wanted to share some of our tips for thriving in your marriage.

Marriage can be a beautiful thing.

But it can also be really hard + a lot of work.

But that work is totally worth it when you see the benefits of that work.

1.png

Put your phones away for a few hours and keep learning about each other, keep enjoying their company and don't stop adventuring.  Find new ways to surprise each other.

Go for a massage regularly.  Get your hair done.  Do things that fill your cup.  After all, you can't pour from an empty cup.  You can't give your marriage the love and attention it deserves if you're burnt out or exhausted.  Find things you can do together, like meditate or exercise.  But have one or two things you can do each week that fills you back up.

This is a hard one.  Marriage takes real work.  And you have to choose which hills you'll die on and which ones don't matter.  Learn to let the things that don't matter, slide.  Marriage can be a beautiful thing but it does real work.

You now have someone else involved in every aspect of your life. The decisions you make daily affect your spouse, let them know your plans, include them in your decisions...

One thing that Joel & I find helpful, especially now with kids going in every direction, is to sit and chat on Sunday evenings about the week ahead.  Whose doing what, going where and what do we really need to accomplish that week.

Work at it together.  I know not all spouses care about the looks of your house.  But ask their opinion and find some projects you can work on together on weekends.  Make your bedroom a safe and device free room.

Any other unique details or stories about your wedding/love story you want to tell us?

"When we met at the party 11 years ago, I was instantly attracted to him like it was love at first sight. Me and a friend got into his car to go up to the store, and when he looked at me, he immediately smiled and blushed away all coy like. That is why I started off my vows with, "When I saw you I fell in love, and you smiled because you knew." In his vows, he also referred to love at first sight upon meeting me, and how he knew I was something special."

One of our favourite things about Celine + Nate's wedding was all the DIY touches.  Her attention to all the little details shined through on her wedding day and we adore it.

February Real Bride | Celine Says Yes To The Dress

Celine said yes to the dress on May 5th 2016 and Once Upon A Time Weddings was her first stop for dress shopping! She trusted her gut and knew she had found the one! Celine also came back for her maids gowns and says this about her second experience, "My second experience was really helpful, accommodating and I felt like I trusted the staff to find what style I was looking for." We love seeing you brides more than just once! Enjoy reading all about Celine's experience saying yes to the dress below!

Dress3.jpeg

About how many dresses did you try on before you found 'The One'?

"Technically one, because the first dress I tried on was the one I came specifically for and ended up saying "Yes" too, but about 3-4 others afterwards."

Was the dress you bought similar to what you came in thinking you wanted?

"Yes, just like I envisioned!"
Dress6.jpeg

Were you expecting to purchase your dress when you came in for your appointment?

"It was still early in our engagement so I wasn't even planning on shopping yet, but OUATW uploaded a picture on their facebook page of a brand new gown that I happened to see. I was gushing with joy, and I just knew it was "The one" and so I called the next day to make an appointment for that following Saturday. I wasn't expecting to purchase that day, but my mind was so set on the dress I seen that I just needed to know for sure. They say that most brides don't end up with a dress they always vision themselves in, but I've always been the type of women to just know. Poofy, princess, bling and ball gown is what I always seen myself in, and I got it!"
Dress4.jpeg

Who was with you at your appointment?

"My mom, Grandma, MOH and aunt."

Did anyone have extra influence on helping you say yes to the dress?

"My Grandma. As she was helping me in it for the second time, she silently told me how I wouldn't find anything better as mine was so unique, and gorgeous."
Dress5.jpeg

How was your experience at Once Upon A Time Weddings?

"Amazing! I'm the type who likes personal experiences, and needs to connect with others. I enjoyed the laid back, not rushed atmosphere where I felt like the center of attention. (I waited 10 years for this day, I wanted my moment) haha!"
Dress2.jpeg

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your story to finding the dress?

"I knew about OUTW before being engaged from other brides going there, and their great experiences so I was always excited at the thought of getting to go there myself one day. Leading up to dress shopping, I of course had pictures saved on what styles I wanted but nothing stood out to me like seeing the one OUATW posted that one magical night."

February Real Bride | Celine & Nate Stasiuk

We are excited to welcome our February Real Bride: Celine Stasiuk to the blog today! Celine and Nate got married on September 9th of 2017 and we loved having her in the store each and every time she was in!  We hope you guys enjoy reading their love story and proposal as much as we loved hearing it!

Engage4.jpg

How did the two of you meet?

"At a house party with mutual friends in the summertime."
Engage3.jpg

How'd you know your fiancé was the one?

"I always knew when I laid eyes on him."
Engage2.jpg

How did your fiancé propose? (from the brides point of view)

"It was a typical night, nothing much going on. We were cooking pancakes together for dinner, laughing and enjoying each others company. He wasn't acting out of the ordinary, so I didn't suspect anything. After we were finished eating, I got up to start cleaning but he suggested that we just sit together and talk (this is when I started to feel something was up, cause normally after supper he would just go and play his video games). I sat back down, and he got quiet saying, he had something to tell me, but don't know how. I repeated "What" a few times feeling anxious as he was still quiet. In a flash, he pulled out a box from his sweater, placed it in front of me, opened it and asked if I would marry him. My body was in such a state of shock, that it felt like I was having an out of body experience. Still in shock mode, I kept saying "OMG, are you for real" before saying yes, of course gushing and squealing."
Engage1.jpg

How did you propose? (from the grooms point of view)

"We were having pancakes for supper, I had the ring in my pocket. After dinner, I told Celine that I had something to tell her, but that I didn't know how. I got really nervous, pulled out the ring and asked Celine to marry me all in one motion. When she was done saying "Are you for real" She said yes."

2017 Wedding Trends That Are Still Hot in 2018

Are you planning your 2018 wedding and feel like you're going off the grid when it comes to traditions? You aren't alone, you actually may be trendy! Today, we are taking a look at 6 trends that we saw in 2017 that are continuing to grow in 2018. Let us know if you're implementing anything off this list for your wedding!

2018 Wedding Trends.png

|1| Non-Traditional Bride - More and more traditions are going out the window as weddings become more expensive. The rise of the 'laid-back' bride is definitely a trend that we only see growing throughout 2018 - from gowns to venues think outside the traditional box!

|2| Destination Weddings - With the rise of the non-traditional bride, destination weddings continue in popularity. From the whimsical feel of destinations to the thrill of traveling, destination weddings are certainly still on the rise.

|3| Neutral Colour Pallete - Earthy/neutral tones are in for every season. The simplicity, beauty and variety out there of decor, florals, etc you can't go wrong with this colour palette.

|4| Simplicity - Organic all the way. From the florals to the decorations to the colour palettes - brides are doing less when it comes to decor. DIY is still trendy and thank goodness for that because it sure does save a lot on the budget!

|5| Abundance of Greenery - This goes along with simplicity but when it comes to bouquets and floral decor, greenery is on the rise. It can be cheaper, it fills space, and it is beautiful.

|6| Bridal Headpieces - We are seeing more and more brides gravitate towards the metal leaf headpieces! From silver to gold to rose gold, your choices are abundant and here at OUTW we have tons of options for you to try on with your dream gowns!

Wedding Dictionary

We asked what brides wanted to read about on our blog and today we are exploring one of those topics! Here's what a past bride said would have helped her when planning their wedding:

"Think a breakdown of wedding words (i.e. host bar vs cash bar vs open bar) that you find in venue contracts and such would have been a big help! Our venue contract was really easy and transparent, but I struggled a lot when looking at some other spots and reading through all the jargon! Would be helpful to have had a spot that cleared it up easily."

So here we go: a 'Wedding Dictionary'!

-Black Tie Optional: Tuxedos and formalwear are suggested for the guests, but not required.

-Cocktail Attire: A dress code that is less formal - calls for suits and cocktail dresses.

-Cosplay: Short for 'Costume Play' - can refer to period dress or theme dress as in paying homage to favorite movie/television/game/comic characters.

-Blusher: A short veil that covers the bride's face, aka. "shoulder length veil".

blusher.jpg

-Bridaller: Another word for a guest of a wedding.

-Bustle: The gathering up of extra fabric or a the train of your gown with buttons or ties to keep the hem of your gown from dragging on the floor.

bustle.jpg

-Cash Bar: When guests buy the drinks rather than them being 'free'/paid for by the host of the wedding at the reception.

-Garter: narrow bands of fabric fastened about the leg that the groom traditionally takes off the bride during the wedding and throws it to the single men, just like the bouquet toss.

-Host Bar: Where the host of the wedding issues vouchers to attendees for a limited number of free drinks, and attendees pay for any further drinks themselves.

-Open Bar: The host pays for all the drinks the entire night of the wedding, no limit per guest.

-Day of Planner: A wedding coordinator who works with you primarily on the day of the wedding to make sure everything goes smoothly (as opposed to a full-service planner who works with you throughout all of the months leading up to the wedding).

-Escort Cards: Cards that display the guest's name and indicate the table they have been assigned for the reception. Below left is a table of escort cards.

escort.jpg

-Processional: The part of the ceremony in which the wedding party and bride walk down the aisle. This can also refer to the music that plays during this time.

-Recessional: The part of the wedding in which the newly married couple, followed by the wedding party, walk back down the aisle after the ceremony.

-Save The Date (STD): A "pre-invite" sent out ASAP to tell guests when the wedding will be.

-Tablescape: The arrangement of the place settings, centerpieces, table numbers, and other decorations on the reception tables.

tablescape.jpg

-Trousseau: The clothes, linens, and other items that a bride saves for her wedding and new married life. Often includes pretty lingerie.
