Styling Your Maids.

Here at Once Upon a Time Weddings our main goal is helping you find your dream dress along with offering our unique in-store experience. But, what can we offer after you 'say yes to the dress'? What else is on your wedding to-do list that we can help you check off? How about finding dresses for those most important girls standing next to you on your day! We offer a wide selection of colours and styles for your bridesmaids along with that same in-store experience all over again!

We combined four of our wedding gowns with some of our bridesmaids dresses to show how your maids dresses can help enhance your gown!

This first one we wanted to show case how different necklines and colours can draw your attention to your gorgeous gown. While staying in a fall colour palette, with this plum tone dress you can absolutely have the same neckline as your wedding gown… its simplistic yet elegant style only accentuates your wedding gown and brings out its blush undertones and sparkle.

Now with the halter neckline you cannot lose, its the complete opposite of your gown and still adds a great colour while playing on texture with this chiffon fabric. Both silhouettes bring a great shape to any body type.

Next, we show a way to 'bring out your bling' even more by accenting your dress with maids dresses that have fall inspired colours and lace accents. Here we are keeping more in mind for the cooler season with deep Burgundy and a Navy colour palette. It allows the ivory tone in this horse hair skirt to really pop and be an absolute show stopper.

Thirdly, we are breaking out the lace! This maids dress helps bring out your lace texture and your Ivory wedding gown colour without over doing it. These dresses come in a variety of colours and can make a great statement for any season. (P.S. the blue dress has pockets.. who doesn't love those!?)

Lastly, the boho look! We have combined a long flowing gown with a deep v-neck and a short flirty and fun lace v-neck. Different shades, lengths, and styles; who ever said your girls had to be matching in these categories! This neutral colour scheme goes great for a boho theme, and compliments any skin tone.

March Real Bride | Doerbecker Wedding

Today, we finish out our journey with Real Bride Heather + Husband Jamie.  They tied the knot on a beautiful fall day last September 16, 2017.  Let's dive into the story of their wedding day...

Their ceremony was at Coldstream Conservation Area + their reception was at Coldstream Community Centre.

HeatherWedding1.jpg

Who were your favourite vendors from your wedding day?

Our caterers BBQ Feast were amazing! Latte productions did a beautiful job capturing our day and got so many pictures. We did a lot of our own decorations with the help of our parents, family, and family friends. Our DJ was a family friend who did a great job keeping everyone on the dance floor. Our florists from Bloomingdale's did an amazing job incorporating purple and red flowers into our bouquets and centerpieces. We had one of our uncle's bake the desserts which were a huge hit! Jamie and I helped bake some the desserts as well which was a lot of fun.
HeatherWedding2.jpg

Any other unique details or stories about your wedding/love story you want to tell us?

We loved being able to have the first look before the ceremony, it helped us calm our nerves and give us a chance to have a special moment just the two of us. We met as orientation leaders and have been together 5 years, we got married close to our 5 year anniversary (a day earlier).
HeatherWedding3.jpg

What's your favourite memory from your wedding day?

Heather's: My favourite part of our wedding day was everything it was perfect! We had the perfect weather and the perfect day. I loved being able to marry my best friend and celebrate with our family and friends
Jamie's: I really enjoyed hearing all the speeches, it was nice to be able to look back while also looking forward to our new life together.

What did your husband think of your dress?

I was speechless when I was finally able to see Heather in her dress at our first look. She was absolutely beautiful and it was a great look on her.

March Real Bride | Heather's Dress

We love all of our brides at OUTW!  Heather heads a special place in our hearts as we have known her for several years & been able to watch her grow up and mature in the beautiful woman she is today.

So we were so excited when she came to OUTW to find her gown.  She came in hoping to find a beautiful experience, unsure if she would purchase that day and she left with a beautiful gown + an equally beautiful grin!  Let's journey together through her appointment where Heather said YES to the Dress!!

HeatherDress3.jpg

Were you expecting to purchase your dress when you came in for your appointment?

It was the first day trying on dresses, I was not expecting to buy my dress that day
HeatherDress4.jpg

About how many dresses did you try on before you found 'The One'?

Around 10 dresses. My dress was the last one I tried on

Who was with you at your appointment?

My mom and 2 sisters

Did anyone have extra influence on helping you say yes to the dress?

My mom, sisters and Sharon. Sharon convinced me to try on the dress that became my dress.
HeatherDress1.jpg

Was the dress you bought similar to what you came in thinking you wanted?

Nothing at all like I had in mind, this dress totally exceeded my vision!

Did you try on dresses before coming to OUTW?

Yes I did.
HeatherDress2.jpg

How was your experience at Once Upon A Time Weddings?

It was perfect! Sharon made me feel welcome, wanted to know all about Jamie, how long we had been together, how he proposed, when our wedding was, what I was looking for in a dress. She sat down with me and asked to see pictures of what I was thinking, she asked my mom and sisters what they wanted to see me in. I had it in my mind I did not want a ball gown because it was too much dress. Sharon brought me a few options and let me pick what to try on. She convinced me to try on the ball gown which I was avoiding. It was the last dress I tried on, she said that I could custom my dress and take away some of the skirt and change the top. I really wanted lace on the top of my dress, Sharon showed me some options of different options. I picked out the one I wanted and then the skirt. I ended up going with the ball gown. I loved it without all the skirt! I was the last one to realize that it was my dress. My mom was the first one as she got teary, then my sisters, then me. I loved my dress and going to Once Upon a Time Weddings. It was the third store I went too and I was super nervous I had a feeling that my dress would be there and that I would find my dress.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your story to finding the dress?

I would recommend Once Upon a Time Weddings to anyone looking for a wedding dress, bridesmaid dress or even a mother of the bride/groom dress. It was such a great experience, and made me feel special. I was hoping for the experience I had seen on TV and it was so much better! Thank you for helping me find my dress it was beautiful!

The Question That I Really, Really Dislike.

This is a blog that I originally wrote a couple of years ago.  However, I feel like it's time to share again.  As a business owner, I sometimes get asked a question that I dislike.  That question is, "is that the lowest price you'll go". Or some version of this question.  There's a few reasons that I don't like that question and here's why.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

First of all, Once Upon A Time Weddings is not competing in the lowest price gown category. We carefully select our gowns {from literally thousands & thousands available for us to buy} based on the quality and workmanship of the gown itself. I am of the belief that you get what you pay for and sometimes spending a bit more to get a better quality is necessary. Sure, you can find gowns that are cheaper than ours at other bridal stores, but we want you to purchase a gown that’s well made so it alters easier and is comfortable to wear for an entire day. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you want to take your gown off before dessert has even been served.

IMG_0926.JPG

I spend a great deal of time and money developing my skills & honing my profession.

The second reason that this question bothers me is that I have spent thousands of dollars on my training. I didn’t just wake up one day and decide to sell wedding gowns. I attend conferences twice a year and stay on top of industry standards and trends. I belong to a group of talented bridal stores from all across the world that I spend time networking with and learning from. We strive to be the best in our industry - an industry that’s highly competitive and constantly changing. It’s not a job we take lightly or do because it’s so much fun {although it is fun, well most days}. It’s not a hobby or an after school activity. We don't dare ask our dentists, lawyers, physiotherapists, “is this the best price you can give me?”. We wouldn’t dream of it, because we respect those professions, the schooling they have done and the work they do. But then, why do wedding professionals get asked that question all the time? Why is it okay in one industry, but no one would dream of asking it in another?

alt-logo.png

I take it personally.

If I’m being completely honest, the third reason I dislike the question is because I take it personally. My entire life is wrapped into this bridal store. I spend insane amounts of time working, developing, planning, strategizing and so much more for our brides. Often when I get asked this question it’s after I have spent a good amount of time working with my bride. I feel like I have taken the time to get to know her and that I’ve connected with her. When the dreaded question comes up, I feel as though the amount of work I’ve spent both before she’s ever arrived to my store and during the appointment have in some way not been good enough. Or that maybe they don’t value my expertise.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m female, which means I’m all for getting a deal. The rush of getting something on sale. I’ve been known to purchase something simply because it was on sale. I tell my husband all the time, that I’m determined to be successful because I love pretty things. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to get a good deal or save some money. It’s why if you have come to a bridal appointment at Once Upon A Time Weddings, you know we don’t like to put you in a gown above your budget without your expressed permission. It’s just that the question of, “what’s the best price you can give me on this gown” tends to be a bit insulting.

If you still dare to ask it, you’ll most likely be greeted with a warm smile and the response, the best price I can give you is the one that’s on the price tag. Because to be honest, I don’t run this business to be a millionaire. We take time to strategically price our goods to offer both good value to our customers and to make a living to us. This is our livelihood. It’s what we do to feed our family and make sure they have what they need. And it's not just my livelihood, I have a team that rely on me to make good business decisions and continue to be able to pay them.

Think of it this way: if you would be offended by your boss strolling into your office and asking what’s the lowest you’ll accept on your next paycheque, then please think twice before asking that dreaded question.

We simply adore our brides & working with them.  The goal of this blog isn't to insult, but to educate you.  We love what we do each and every day.  We love the role we get to have in our bride's wedding days.

We absolutely ADORE these two and can't wait for you to scroll through these pictures and read all about their wedding day. True love is just radiating off of these two in every photo throughout their day! It just proves that you don't need all the glitz and glam to show off your love for one another, and what really makes your wedding day special is your love for one another.

Where did you get married/have your reception?

"At the sugar bush down the road from us."

What's your favourite memory from your wedding day?

"My favourite memory was the smiles on everyone's faces. I have never felt so happy, and just having all of our families there was amazing. Even my grandchildren were there."

Who were your favourite vendors from your wedding day?

"Family members catered the food and we did everything with the help of friends and family."

Fall Muses.

IMG_3781.JPG

It’s already NOVEMBER! What on earth is happening! I knew that this fall would fly by and I was not wrong.  This fall has been full of travel, growing pains and huge success!  We had our best sales month we’ve ever had in the history of our store in September and for that I’m so incredibly thankful!  Each week more and more brides are welcomed into the Once Upon A Time Weddings.

As you can imagine we’re so happy to be welcoming them into our family! But with that comes some growing pains as we continue to expand our little boutique.  So as always we welcome your feedback as we continue to serve you better!

This fall I had the amazing opportunity of traveling to bridal market in September.  It was part of my girl’s incentive over the summer to reach certain goals and they could come on the trip with me.  They did it and earned coming to market for two days.  They had a lot of fun and we chose some beautiful new styles for the store both in our bridal and bridesmaids departments.  Now just to wait for them to arrive.

In October I headed to Las Vegas where I spoke at Wedding MBA for my coaching business on bridal store inventory.  What a learning experience that was!  I love my job but I am very introverted so this was a bit of a leap for me.  But I’m so glad that I took it.

At the end of October I headed off to Orange Beach for a conference and work retreat.  I was so happy to have some uninterrupted time to dream, think and plan for 2017.  I can’t believe how far our business has come and I look forward to the future!

Now I’m home.  While I enjoyed all my trips, I’m so glad to be staying put for a bit and to buckle down and get caught up on some of the work that has been backlogging while we’ve been busy.

If you’re a bride of ours – whether you bought your gown four years ago or four days ago we’d love for you to come over to our facebook group and join in on the fun!  Request to join now: https://www.facebook.com/groups/OUTWbridetribe/

Also if you’re one of our Once Upon A Time Weddings bride or you’re thinking about being one of our brides, then we’d love to invite you to our Christmas Open House.  It’s our way of giving back to our customers.  We’d love to hang out with you, feed you yummy snacks, drink champagne together and just enjoy the season!  Some of our fave wedding vendors will also be participating in this event! For more details check out our event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1466555216707018/

Also Santa is coming to Once Upon A Time Weddings again this Christmas and he’s giving one of our brides a FREE wedding gown.  Keep your eyes peeled to our facebook page & Instagram page for more information!

New Accessories Line!

Ever since we returned from Chicago Bridal Market, Sharon & I have been anticipating the arrival of our new accessory line.  We're super thrilled to carry this line in the store for two reasons...

1.) They are sold exclusively at our store.

2.) They are made in England. {instead of China}.  This means they are of higher quality and more of a handmade look than a rhinestone look.
