Wedding Invitation Etiquette

Today we are going to chat about wedding invitation etiquette which was one of the many topics we received from our followers. So first, we think it's important that there isn't really a right or wrong way to do things for YOUR wedding. But there are guidelines out there that you can start with if you have no idea where to even begin!

1) First off, what do you need to include in your wedding invitation?

  • Who's hosting.

  • Bride and Groom's maiden names.

  • The actual invitation - "We request your presence at our wedding..."

  • Date, location, and time.

  • Reception to follow (address if it's a different location).

2) When addressing the outside of the envelope go with your overall theme; are you a traditional bride or are you going the more casual route. Either way, below is a list of overall etiquette for addressing your envelope in different situations; IE: unmarried, different last names, Dr, etc.

3) Wording the inside of your invitation based on who is hosting the wedding. Again, this does depend on how formal you are going but either way here are some tips that people typically use.

  • If parents are married: "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith"

  • If parents are separated: "Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Doe."

  • If parents are deceased: "Mr. John Smith and the late Mrs. Jane Smith."

  • If parents are remarried: Mother of the bride is written first then followed by Father of the bride.

  • If couple is hosting wedding on their own: "Together with our families, (insert bride and groom's name) invite you to celebrate..."

We hope this helps with some of the questions we received about the etiquette of addressing wedding invites!

Simple Decor Goes A Long Way

One question we get a lot is "how do we stay within budget while still having the wedding of our dreams?" The million dollar question right! This is where Pinterest gets sticky, it's a great resource but can make your expectations a bit out of your realistic budget. Well, that's where Pinterest is also winning - their DIY ideas are on point when it comes to wedding decorations! We've pulled some easy ways to make your decor go a long way while saving a lot of money.

1. Collecting everyday items and dressing them up. Wine bottles, mason jars, cans, driftwood, etc. Spray painting, adding glitter, etc. to these items makes them brand new and you can fit them exactly to your theme! Don't be afraid to ask around, people are throwing these things away everyday!

2. Make your own signs. Chances are you or someone you know has great handwriting so making your own signs is a great way to save on cost and gives your wedding a sense of uniquness.

3. Don't discount the dollar store! You can find some serious wedding decor treasures in there. Go in with an open mind and use your imagination! From frames, to candles, to vases, to rocks/pebbles; there is lots of room to go decor crazy in there!

4. Nature is your friend! Now, this one depends on what season you are getting married in, but chances are you picked that season because you like it! Sticks, wildflowers, rocks, etc. You can use these naturally or dress them up with paint/spray paint/glitter.

A Not-So-Tacky Canadian Inspired Wedding

In the spirit of Canada Day last weekend we were feeling all the red and white pride so we couldn't pass up an opportunity to plan a Canadian inspired wedding -- a not-so-tacky one at that. Whether you are getting married in Canada or wanting to bring some of your homeland with you for a destination wedding we've got some tips to help you show some love to the true north.

1) Incorporate Canadian inspired food into your big day. This is something people will oh-so-subtly say "this reminds me of Canada" or "this was my favourite food growing up." And who doesn't love some poutine or beaver tails?

2) Canadian inspired favours. This is such a cute way for any couple to add easy personalization to their big day, so why not throw a Canadian inspired twist on it too?

3) This one is for all you winter brides.Throw on a Hudson's Bay blanket scarf or some traditional Canadian mittens for a couple photos! This can be such a cute way for the two of you to pay tribute to your love of Canada long after your actual wedding day.

4) Add a signature Canadian drink to your cocktail list. Whether it's the classic Caesar or some Canadian whisky we're sure this will be a hit on the big day!

Leave us a comment on ways you included Canada into your wedding day, we'd love to hear!

Vendor Interview | Bake Shop Studio

Cake, cake and more cake, who doesn't love cake?! We interviewed the Kate St Laurent, from Bake Shop Studio for this month's vendor interview and it has us drooling! From cakes to cupcakes, Kate has it all for your wedding! And, she doesn't fall short on the icing decorations! 😍

How far in advance does the couple need to book?

"4-6 months out."

What kinds of baked goods do you offer for weddings?

"Cakes and Cupcakes."

What sets your baking apart from others in this area?

"I began my baking career after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts at NSCAD University. I took all of my Fine Arts training and applied it to the Baking world, studying with international cake artist Lori Hutchinson and Sweetapolita author Rosie Alyea at Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts in Toronto. Cakes are a way to continue the practice of creating Art, now in an edible medium. I use local Arva Flour and I have developed my recipes with years of testing and experience behind each one. I love creating beautiful cakes but above all the cakes are created from the highest quality ingredients I can find. Looking beautiful is great but your wedding cake should better than any other cake you have tried before."

How often do you like to connect with the couple before the wedding?

"Usually couples will come into the shop to meet with me and try some cake samples and talk about their wedding plans. I can show them my work and discuss ideas I have for their wedding cake. After this initial meeting bride and grooms tend to stay in contact via email until the wedding date gets closer."

How can the couple customize their wedding package with you?

"I love designing cakes to flow with the decor, floral arrangements or overall vibes of the wedding style. I like to take inspiration from elements already in the wedding - the invitation, the venue, the bride and groom's style to create a personalized design for their cake."

How much experience do you have with baking for weddings?

"I began my Baking career working in local bakeries in London in 2009 and continued right up until I opened Bake Shop Studio in 2016."

How much of an investment is the couple looking at?

Prices are based on customizations and number of guests.

How do you help the couple pre-wedding?

"Usually the Wedding couple meet with me for a complimentary cake tasting (who doesn't love that) which is a relaxed and comfortable place to chat, try some cake and talk about wedding plans."

How do you help the couple post-wedding?

"Post Wedding I am happy to advise the couple how to properly store their top tier if they have chosen to save it for their wedding anniversary"

Thank you Kate, for taking the time to chat with us and we hope this helped some of you brides reading! If you're in the middle of wedding planning and have yet to find a bakery to provide your wedding cake or desserts, contact Kate at the Bake Shop Studio for rates and customizations.
