real bride of OUTW

Blog | Advice From A Real Bride.

Happy Friday! It's hard to believe we're in May already.  The weather is finally nice and it's making us dream of summer, campfires, walks on the beach + of course, summer weddings!

Today on the blog, we're sharing some Real Bride advice.  This month we're featuring Alexa Wallace who tied the knot on May 27, 2017.  Happy almost Anniversary!  I still remember doing her bridal appointment.  She came in thinking she'd end up in a fitted gown & left with the most beautiful ball gown.  Let's dive into her bridal advice.

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give a newly engaged bride-to-be? Please explain:)

Enjoy the process! You only get one engagement, one time to call each other fiance/fiancee, one time to plan this whole thing! Have fun with it, and remember above all else you're planning a moment where you're closest friends and family witness you two commit yourselves to each other. The party for us, while immensely important as I LOVE to plan parties, was always secondary. Not that we skimped, we made it as fabulous as we wanted it to, but we made sure that our ceremony, that moment where we become husband and wife in front of our loved ones, was the highlight and the most important aspect of the day and planning since we saw it as Day 1 of the rest of our lives together.

What is the best advice you would give for a bride-to-be who is searching for her dream dress?

I think don't go in to it with expectations, as hard as that is because for a lot of us we've had this idea in our heads of how it'll look or how we'll feel for so so long. So do your best to breathe, wash away those mental images, and just be very present in the moment and true to yourself and how you feel. My dress was no kidding the absolute complete opposite of what I pictured myself in, but as soon as I stepped in to it, I saw in my head myself walking in our venue and seeing my husband waiting for me and it all felt very right. And believe in the words you tell Erin and the girls to help them help you find the right one!

What is the best advice you were given as a bride-to-be?

I'm not sure if any one thing sticks out to me, but probably similar to what I mentioned earlier, to just relax and enjoy the process, it'll all fall in to place and really, you're just planning a big party! I think focusing on the real meaning of the day, marrying your best friend and committing your lives to each other, and staying true to what feels right and represents the two of you and your relationship, will help you stay calm and at ease in the planning.

What is something you regret when wedding planning?

I really wish we had hired a videographer or even asked a family friend to video the ceremony at the very least, it was so special to us. I remember how I felt saying the vows, and I'll always know what we said as I have it written down from our rehearsal, but I think to see it all over again and be able to re-live it is something we would have really cherished having. It all happens so fast, a beautiful blur of a day!

What is one thing you're glad you did when you were planning your wedding/engaged?

Since we bought our house halfway through our engagement before our wedding, we had a lot of time, energy and finances that were being dedicated to renovations! So we would spend a couple weeks tackling some wedding items, then put it on the back burner for a couple months. That back and forth helped it from being all consuming, kept us on track to really hammer out details and stay focused to what we wanted for the big day, and it kept us relaxed and enjoying our time together as an engaged couple and not just a couple planning a wedding.

Is there anything else you'd want to tell a future bride?

Stay true to what you and your partner want out of your big day and what truly represents you as a couple! At the end of it all, you gain a spouse and partner for life, so make sure to focus on that first and foremost and let the party planning be a fun aspect of the whole process! Place subtle details and memorable touches here and there, but don't stress if something gets forgotten or missed, by the time the food and drink get flowing all that matters is you're enjoying this moment surrounded by the ones you both love and who love you! Cheers lovely!

Real Bride | Kelsey + Greg's Wedding Day!

Well here we are already at the third week of April.  Today we get to journey through Kelsey + Greg's wedding day.  They got married on February 10th, 2018 at Windermere Manor.  Let's dive into their wedding day story.

What did your (now) husband think of your dress?

It was a beautiful dress that was unique to her.

What's your favourite memory from your wedding day?

We both loved getting ready with our wedding party, as well as hanging out and dancing during the reception. I also sang to Greg during the ceremony after taking SIX MONTHS of singing lessons in secret. No one had any idea what I planned except for the vendors and I will never forget the look on Greg's face as I sang to him.

Who were your favourite vendors from your wedding day?

It's hard to choose! Can we say all of them?
Our day would not have been possible without them.
Michelle A Photography, Through the Lens Productions, Unmistakably You, Caleb from DJ Alpha, NJS Designs, Jim Anderson Flowers, Studio 83 Hair Design, Catherine Krahn (makeup), Invited by Dani, Jeff Hicks (officiant)

We have loved taking this journey with Kelsey + Greg and we wish them many, many years of a happy marriage.  May you look back on your wedding day as the beginning of your next chapter together.

Meet Our February Real Bride Ashlan!

We are so excited to be featuring Ashlan as our first Once Upon A Time Weddings Real Bride through the month of February! Ashlan and Paul met through eHarmony, they talked for almost a month online before finally meeting in person and when they finally set up a date to meet they hit a few bumps but didn't let that stop them!

How did the two of you meet?

"Paul and I met through eHarmony. We talked for almost a month through the site before finally meeting in person. Paul actually had to cancel on me the first two times we had planned to get together; once he was stuck in Michigan for work, and the second time he needed to drive a family member out of town. It was so nice to see that family was important to him, even though I was disappointed. We finally got together for our first date on February 17, 2014 - a London Lightning basketball game on Family Day. I still tease him about our first two attempts – I remember sending him a text message that said, “Just remember. Three strikes and you’re out!” (I love baseball!) I guess he took it seriously!"

How'd you know Paul was the one?

"There were a couple of moments that showed me he was the one (besides the first time I made him dinner and he showed up with a 5lb bag of dried liver for my German Shepherd, Luna). When his niece (who lives in England) turned 10, Paul travelled all the way to England overnight to surprise her for her birthday by taking her to a OneDirection concert. It was the sweetest thing I’ve ever witnessed, and you could tell how important that relationship is to her; he loves being an Uncle! I think he was on the ground in England for a total of 18 hours- tell me that doesn’t pull on your heart strings! I also dessert catered a wedding fairly early on into our relationship, and was up for close to three days straight. He was so supportive and understanding; not everyone has the patience to deal with that! I remember one night I was so tired, and I told him that maybe a kiss goodnight would help. At the time, he lived on the complete other side of the city from me, about a 30 minute drive. Sure enough, 30 minutes later – 11:30 at night on a weekday when he had to work the next day – there was a knock on my door and there he was, just for a kiss goodnight. He’s filled my life with little moments of love and affection like that ever since."

How did your fiancé propose? - Ashlan's Point of View-

"In January 2015, Paul's parents were visiting from England for the first time and we took them to Niagara on the Lake for some site seeing and shopping. He knew that Niagara Falls/Niagara on the Lake holds a special place in my heart because it's where my maternal grandmother and grandfather got married and purchased their first home; and I have a very close relationship with them. I love the gazebo on the waterfront, so when our walk took us there, we were looking out at the beautiful frozen water, and when I turned around, there he was on one knee. He had written me the sweetest poem, with "You're my happily ever after" written on the other side. I was crying so hard I said, "ok" instead of "yes!" He still teases me about it to this day. I remember staring at my hand the whole way back to the car – I didn’t care that it was -15 outside and I could barely feel it anymore! It was so exciting to call everyone and share the exciting news on our way home from the car. I keep the poem on my desk at work – it makes me smile every time I see it."

How did you propose? - Paul's Point of View-

"Driving down to Niagara, I felt what I’m sure most guys do – I was excited, but nervous. I couldn’t tell if she knew what was happening or not, and I kept trying to catch her eye without making it obvious. It was good to spend time there; I know she loves Niagara on the Lake and we’re there a lot. I remember it being cold that day, so wearing gloves made things a bit complicated. I decided to leave them in the car, and she kept telling me, “you’re going to get cold!” Clearly, she had no idea! I was worried I was going to drop the ring, so I left it in the box in my coat pocket. But on the walk I remembered that the rings were a set, so the entire time we were walking down to the water, I kept trying to separate the engagement ring from the wedding band and get it out of the box on it’s own without her noticing. Thankfully, it all worked out and she looked so surprised. And she’s right, I do still tease her about saying, “OK”. The day before the wedding I reminded her that she had to say, “I do” in the ceremony for it to be legal, haha! It was also really nice to have my parents there be a part of it all, plus we got photos of it which are nice to look back on."

Next week we'll be talking about how Ashlan said yes to the dress here at Once Upon A Time Weddings!
