On Growth | Where OUTW is Headed.

Over a year and a half ago, I wrote a blog with the same title. We were anticipating our new move to the store. We were busting out of our old space and needed to expand.

And here we are a year and a half later and we continue to grow.

And we’re so, so thankful for that. We’re extremely thankful for all of our customers who shop with us, tell their friends about us, and share our posts on social media.

We’ve had several staff meetings over the last few months digging into what’s next for Once Upon A Time Weddings and really looking at what we do well and what we need to work on. Because in the business world, growth can be a double edge sword.

We want to keep growing to serve more and more brides. But we also want to make sure that the brides that we have are served well.

So, first things first. We are looking for another part time bridal stylist for the store. We are not necessarily looking for someone with experience in bridal. We are looking for someone who is hard working, open to learning, passionate about fashion and available Saturdays and weekday evenings.

To apply, please email your resume and why you think you’d be a perfect match to info@onceuponatimeweddings.ca.

Secondly, we have some really exciting events happening at the store in the next few months. We did a Facebook live today explaining them. Click here to watch it.

And we have some other big news that we are working on. So be sure to follow along on our instagram + Facebook pages for more information.

Styling Your Maids.

Here at Once Upon a Time Weddings our main goal is helping you find your dream dress along with offering our unique in-store experience. But, what can we offer after you 'say yes to the dress'? What else is on your wedding to-do list that we can help you check off? How about finding dresses for those most important girls standing next to you on your day! We offer a wide selection of colours and styles for your bridesmaids along with that same in-store experience all over again!

We combined four of our wedding gowns with some of our bridesmaids dresses to show how your maids dresses can help enhance your gown!

This first one we wanted to show case how different necklines and colours can draw your attention to your gorgeous gown. While staying in a fall colour palette, with this plum tone dress you can absolutely have the same neckline as your wedding gown… its simplistic yet elegant style only accentuates your wedding gown and brings out its blush undertones and sparkle.

Now with the halter neckline you cannot lose, its the complete opposite of your gown and still adds a great colour while playing on texture with this chiffon fabric. Both silhouettes bring a great shape to any body type.

Next, we show a way to 'bring out your bling' even more by accenting your dress with maids dresses that have fall inspired colours and lace accents. Here we are keeping more in mind for the cooler season with deep Burgundy and a Navy colour palette. It allows the ivory tone in this horse hair skirt to really pop and be an absolute show stopper.

Thirdly, we are breaking out the lace! This maids dress helps bring out your lace texture and your Ivory wedding gown colour without over doing it. These dresses come in a variety of colours and can make a great statement for any season. (P.S. the blue dress has pockets.. who doesn't love those!?)

Lastly, the boho look! We have combined a long flowing gown with a deep v-neck and a short flirty and fun lace v-neck. Different shades, lengths, and styles; who ever said your girls had to be matching in these categories! This neutral colour scheme goes great for a boho theme, and compliments any skin tone.

Inspiration Blog | Secret Garden Theme.

We have seen a lot of different themes over the years.  And we absolutely love it when a couple chooses a theme that matters to them and goes all out!  When it comes to wedding themes, your imagination is your only limit.  {Well and maybe your budget lol}

Today on the blog, I wanted to share a Secret Garden Wedding Theme.  And of course, we picked a gown from OUTW that we think would be perfect for this theme.

Let's dive in!

The reason that I love the theme of Secret Garden is because I love the mix of whimsical and romantic.  Like this cake table created by Selah Vie Weddings + Events.  I love the mix of cupcakes, cakes and macaroons made by Bright Eyes Cake Design.  Photography by Dylan Martin Photography.

I love the soft hues of these colours together.  And I love the return of gold accents in wedding decor and wedding planning.  Photograph from Pinterest.

We love these centrepieces for a secret garden wedding theme.  Simple, yet beautiful.  As a big book reader, I love how they incorporated old books and how it gives a nod to classic, olden days.  Photograph from Pinterest.

These invitations from The Paper Bride, which are available at Once Upon A Time Weddings are the perfect addition to any garden wedding.  I love the florals mixed with the navy colour.

The Secret Garden Theme is the perfect theme for mix-matched bridesmaids.  We love these colours together and they still give you lots of colour choices for florals + decor.

We adore this gown which will arrive to OUTW in August.  We cannot wait for brides to try it on.  We love the lace details and how it has a touch of lace underneath the tulle skirt.  We think it's the perfect combination of whimsical and romantic, just like the Secret Garden theme.

The Question That I Really, Really Dislike.

This is a blog that I originally wrote a couple of years ago.  However, I feel like it's time to share again.  As a business owner, I sometimes get asked a question that I dislike.  That question is, "is that the lowest price you'll go". Or some version of this question.  There's a few reasons that I don't like that question and here's why.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

First of all, Once Upon A Time Weddings is not competing in the lowest price gown category. We carefully select our gowns {from literally thousands & thousands available for us to buy} based on the quality and workmanship of the gown itself. I am of the belief that you get what you pay for and sometimes spending a bit more to get a better quality is necessary. Sure, you can find gowns that are cheaper than ours at other bridal stores, but we want you to purchase a gown that’s well made so it alters easier and is comfortable to wear for an entire day. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you want to take your gown off before dessert has even been served.

IMG_0926.JPG

I spend a great deal of time and money developing my skills & honing my profession.

The second reason that this question bothers me is that I have spent thousands of dollars on my training. I didn’t just wake up one day and decide to sell wedding gowns. I attend conferences twice a year and stay on top of industry standards and trends. I belong to a group of talented bridal stores from all across the world that I spend time networking with and learning from. We strive to be the best in our industry - an industry that’s highly competitive and constantly changing. It’s not a job we take lightly or do because it’s so much fun {although it is fun, well most days}. It’s not a hobby or an after school activity. We don't dare ask our dentists, lawyers, physiotherapists, “is this the best price you can give me?”. We wouldn’t dream of it, because we respect those professions, the schooling they have done and the work they do. But then, why do wedding professionals get asked that question all the time? Why is it okay in one industry, but no one would dream of asking it in another?

I take it personally.

If I’m being completely honest, the third reason I dislike the question is because I take it personally. My entire life is wrapped into this bridal store. I spend insane amounts of time working, developing, planning, strategizing and so much more for our brides. Often when I get asked this question it’s after I have spent a good amount of time working with my bride. I feel like I have taken the time to get to know her and that I’ve connected with her. When the dreaded question comes up, I feel as though the amount of work I’ve spent both before she’s ever arrived to my store and during the appointment have in some way not been good enough. Or that maybe they don’t value my expertise.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m female, which means I’m all for getting a deal. The rush of getting something on sale. I’ve been known to purchase something simply because it was on sale. I tell my husband all the time, that I’m determined to be successful because I love pretty things. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to get a good deal or save some money. It’s why if you have come to a bridal appointment at Once Upon A Time Weddings, you know we don’t like to put you in a gown above your budget without your expressed permission. It’s just that the question of, “what’s the best price you can give me on this gown” tends to be a bit insulting.

If you still dare to ask it, you’ll most likely be greeted with a warm smile and the response, the best price I can give you is the one that’s on the price tag. Because to be honest, I don’t run this business to be a millionaire. We take time to strategically price our goods to offer both good value to our customers and to make a living to us. This is our livelihood. It’s what we do to feed our family and make sure they have what they need. And it's not just my livelihood, I have a team that rely on me to make good business decisions and continue to be able to pay them.

Think of it this way: if you would be offended by your boss strolling into your office and asking what’s the lowest you’ll accept on your next paycheque, then please think twice before asking that dreaded question.

We simply adore our brides & working with them.  The goal of this blog isn't to insult, but to educate you.  We love what we do each and every day.  We love the role we get to have in our bride's wedding days.

Revealing All The Details of Our Big MOVE!

We were finally able to announce where the store is moving to on a Facebook live on Tuesday!  {Missed it, watch it here!} Today on the blog we wanted to share some of our design details with you all.

When you walk into our store now, you kick off your shoes, curl up on our couch and make yourself feel at home.  It's so important for us to keep that feeling as we move into our new space.  We're designing the store to be bridal suites, similar to what we have now.  Each suite will have it's own fitting area, seating area & mirror!

First some details:

New address: 10 Metcalfe St. (corner of Metcalfe & Caradoc St. N in Mufflerman Plaza)

Anticipated move date: August 2017

We're taking two units, tearing down a wall in between and will have just under 2000 square feet!

Each bridal suite will also have a design wall with a fireplace on it.  We'll build out one of the bridal suite to be for bridesmaids gowns with three small fitting rooms!

We're also very excited that the new store will be more handicapped accessible with a push button front door, handicapped accessible customer washroom and handicapped accessible doors leading into the bridal suites!

We've also had the drop ceiling pulled out and the ceilings will be about fourteen feet tall with beautiful light fixtures.  We saw another unit with a similar ceiling and it's what made us fall in love with the potential of the building.

We were debating whether to paint this all black or white and we finally settled on a darker but still warm grey.  We're super excited!!

So many design choices happened!! The ceiling will be painted the dark grey in the picture, the floor has a nice grey & brown mixed together & the walls will be a warm lighter brown!

The wall is out, the ceiling is pulled up & work is on it's way!  We can't believe how much got done so quickly already!

Be sure to follow us on instagram + check out our stories to see all kinds of behind the scenes shots as we progress towards our new location.  @outweddings

Any questions, shoot us an email to info@onceuponatimeweddings.ca or call the store at 519.245.7997.

Before we move, we're excited to announce we'll be offering exclusive & completely private bridal appointments at our old location during the month of July.  Call the store to book at 519.245.7997.   Your exclusive appointment will be booked after hours so you're the only bride in the store, we'll serve food & champagne, and you'll have the ultimate gown finding experience.  Cost is $150 + 1/2 of it will go towards the purchase of your gown. {Check out our battle of the gowns today because we're giving one away for free today}.
